Mission Statement
S.C. Norfolk is "town soccer". The mission of S.C. Norfolk is to promote and enhance the game of soccer for the youth of Norfolk.

The Objective….”…is to provide the unbiased opportunity and training for boys and girls to learn the game of soccer through individual development of their skills, attitude, fitness, team work, and fair play.” (from the objectives of the Constitution of Norfolk Soccer)

Philosophy
S.C. Norfolk will promote soccer instruction and competitive play as a means to encourage individual, physical and mental development in a team environment. The importance of winning and personal achievement is recognized, but these are to be attained in association with and NOT at the expense of sportsmanship and equal participation for every player.

The basic purpose is to provide a safe, organized, high-quality environment for learning and playing the game of soccer.

Board

S.C. Norfolk is a volunteer organization operated by a Board. Volunteers typically are parents of children in the soccer program, but this does not have to be the case – any parent with an interest in promoting the sport of soccer within Norfolk may participate.

Board meetings are held monthly, and one annual meeting is open to the public. The open meeting is typically at the start of the calendar year.

Outdoor Programs

The S.C. Norfolk soccer program is affiliated with a number of different youth soccer organizations. The program plays in the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) league. BAYS is a member of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) and in turn, MYSA is a member of the United States Youth Soccer Association. Part of your registration fee covers membership dues to these organizations.

By belonging to each of these youth soccer groups, S.C. Norfolk receives certain benefits such as insurance for players and coaches, opportunities to play in organized tournaments, coaches clinics, coach license courses, and many other benefits.  As part of belonging to these organizations, S.C. Norfolk also agrees to follow the guidelines set up by these organizations. Rules that we as a Board strongly support are the Codes of Conduct for players, coaches, and parents. Copies are available in the BAYS map books provided to each player, on this website, and they are also available at the BAYS website http://www.bays.org/.

MYSA conducts competitions for ages Under 9 through Under 18, however S.C. Norfolk fields Under 12 as the oldest team as older children usually sign up with the King Phillip Soccer Association for further development.

The S.C. Norfolk age groups that are entered into the BAYS league are dependent on the number of children that register with S.C. Norfolk, and their ages. In some cases there is insufficient registration to enter teams in all age groups.

S.C. Norfolk only field teams for six-sided games (6 v 6), however eleven-sided teams (11 v 11) for ages 12 and above are considered each year. The number of registrants, their abilities, availability of coaches, and fields are all factors in determining whether eleven-sided teams are entered.

Indoor Programs

Indoor soccer is a fast paced, high scoring, recreational activity that is fun for the players and it affords them the opportunity to keep their skills sharp and get some great exercise in the winter months. Parents/spectators also find it an exciting game to watch. The games are played indoors on synthetic turf, either on boarded or unboarded fields. The boarded fields are similar to a hockey rink, and the boards are used during play.

There are NO practice sessions for indoor soccer, and players usually arrive 10-15 minutes prior to game time ready for play. The time committment to indoor soccer is approximately 1 hour each week. Games are usually on the same day every week, but the start times generally vary between the hours of 4 to 8PM. There are 10 games per session.

As our indoor program is not affiliated with BAYS, we get to play many towns from surrounding areas that are not part of our Fall or Spring programs - some have come from as far as RI to play at the Forekicks facility.

Additionally there are playoffs at the end of the session to determine the section champion in each age group and trophies are awarded to the finalists. Due to the competitive nature of indoor soccer, S.C. Norfolk gives preference to children who meet the following criteria:

  1. Played at least 2 years of indoor soccer with S.C. Norfolk.
  2. Played at least one season of travel soccer with S.C. Norfolk in the previous calendar year.

Fields

S.C. Norfolk does not own any fields, and utilize either Town of Norfolk (outdoor) or private fields (indoor) for game play. Additionally, other groups or other towns share some fields. S.C. Norfolk pays fees to utilize these fields. Within the Town of Norfolk, all soccer fields are under the jurisdiction of, and fees paid to, the Norfolk Recreation Commission.

Outdoor Fields:

·         Freeman Centennial School

Indoor Fields:

·         Forekicks

All soccer related equipment is either owned by S.C. Norfolk, or owned by other groups (e.g. Norfolk Lions Soccer) and shared. Equipment that S.C. Norfolk owns and maintains using part of the registration fees includes:

·         Coaching equipment (bags, balls, first aid, cones, marker, pinnies, etc.)

·         Goals used on the fields

·         Field marking equipment

Insurance

Insurance for players and coaches participating ion the outdoor soccer program is provided as part of our affiliation with MYSA.

For indoor soccer, S.C. Norfolk provides separate Commercial General Liability insurance coverage for all registered players in accordance with Norfolk Recreation Commission requirements. This insurance covers ‘bodily injury’ and ‘property damage’. Your sign up fee has the insurance premium included.

4.What is the difference between Travel Soccer and S.C. Norfolk?

Can I attend Board meetings?
There is one public board meeting held each year where you may attend and gain further insight into S.C. Norfolk or present ideas, ask questions, etc. This meeting is advertised in advance either by flyer, letter mailed to your address, or in our newsletter. You may also attend other scheduled Board meetings upon request if there is something you want to raise or discuss. However you may attend for that agenda item only.

What is the relationship between Norfolk Lions Soccer, S.C. Norfolk, and King Phillip Soccer Association?
There is no formal relationship between any of the organizations, and any communication or coordination is on an ‘as-needed’ basis.

What is the difference between S.C. Norfolk and Norfolk Soccer?
The name S.C. Norfolk (Soccer Club of Norfolk) applies to our everyday activities, however the organization name is still Norfolk Soccer League Inc. for legal and accounting purposes.

What is the difference between Travel Soccer and S.C. Norfolk?
Travel soccer is a term commonly used by people for the soccer program provided by S.C. Norfolk. It is a term used to indicate inter-town competition, and having to ‘travel’ to these towns. Distance traveled will vary depending on the division/section your team participates, but is always within the Boston Area – and usually within the East to South East region bounded by Interstate 495.
